Camping spot

The village of Meers (Limburgish spelling: Meas) is located in the municipality of Stein, the Heart of the Maas Valley.

The camping site “aan de Diek”, established in 2025, is located between the village of Meers and the hamlets of Maasband and Veldschuur.

The area offers a unique view of the development of the Grensmaas project. The Grensmaas project is the largest river project in progress in the Netherlands (website Consortium Grensmaas – The largest river project in progress in the Netherlands), with the aim of protecting against high water from the river Maas. In the past, the village has had to deal with dike breaches and flooding several times. Due to these years of adjustments to the Maas catchment area and the recently put into use secondary channel at the Maasband, the chance of flooding during high water has been greatly reduced. As a visitor, you do not have to worry about this and you can quietly enjoy the beautiful nature that was created during this project.
The gravel washer, which is still in operation, is located a stone’s throw from the campsite.

The nature reserve that has been created here is ideal for active recreation. Various cycling and walking routes run along the campsite. For example, you will also find the “Tree Circle” or “Woodhenge of Meers” here; a monument and work of art consisting of ancient upright trees that were found during gravel excavations in the Maas. Most of them are 1400 to 1700 years old, but the oldest forest giant is more than 4000 years old! All that time they lay under the water, carbonized, waiting to become part of a real work of art.
Alternatively, you can also rent a kayak or canoe from the other side in Belgium to experience the Maas area.
